Cowgirls Soccer Ties Montana in Second Overtime

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls soccer team tied the University of Montana 0-0 in double overtime Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie.

“I thought the energy and effort was there,” Cowgirls’ head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We’ve got to clean up things and that’s part of it. We’ve got a ton of freshman up top and I think it’s just the details.”

The Cowgirls started the game with a shot on goal from senior mid-fielder Annika Clayton. The Cowgirls had two shots on goal during the first half, the other coming from freshman Kennedy Schomer.

“I thought we were dangerous and I thought we were creating a ton of opportunities,” Cuadrado said. “It’s just that last cross. It’s got to be a good one and it’s got to be in the right spot.”

Montana took five shots in the first half. However, only one was on goal from senior Janessa Fowler.

“It seems like they couldn’t score a goal either,” Cuadrado said. “But I thought it was an exciting game for going zero to zero.”

The Cowgirls had six fouls during the first half. Montana only had five fouls.

The Cowgirls started the game with junior Cristina Salazar in goal, but decided to put freshman Hannah Lee in for the second half. Salazar had one save in the first half.

“Hannah’s been playing well,” Cuadrado said. “We’ve been wanting to get her time and Christina (Salazar) has been playing well enough to where we just wanted to get her (Lee) some time. You never know what will happen going through a season.”

Lee made no saves during the second half or the first overtime, but made a crucial save during the second overtime.

“I think we were dominating the second half and into the first overtime,” Hannah Lee said. “[During the second overtime] I saw the ball slip through and I saw there was a little distance between her and the ball and me and the ball and I didn’t think, I just went for it.”

By the end of the game the Cowgirls had four shots on goal and Montana had three. Montana had one yellow card and there were no red cards.

“That was my first game at home and hopefully there will be many more to come,” Lee said. “I’m super excited for the future.”

The Cowgirls next game will be against the University of Iowa on Sunday at noon MST at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie. It is also kids day and there will be a petting zoo at the stadium.
