“The Satanic Verses” author Salman Rushdie spoke at UW on the topic of the writer’s role in the 21st century. ● UW Police began investigating the apparent suicide of student Perrin Recks. ● Bluegrass band “High Altitude,” comprised of several UW students, traveled to Slovakia for an international folk festival. ● Laramie began enforcing leash laws more strictly after non-dog owning citizens complained.

The Laramie City Council made plans to increase youth substance abuse awareness after a record year of drug and alcohol-related incidents. ● Secretary of State Diana Ohman spoke on campus about why she worked to secure Wyoming’s trademark for the bucking horse and rider logo. Of the 25 other people who had trademarked the logo, all but two agreed to begin paying royalties to Wyoming. ● UWPD saw an “unusual” spike in the number of bike thefts reported on campus and suspected someone was trying to turn a profit by stealing and supplying bike parts.

Vietnam War hero Lee Alley returned to UW to finish his studies in business. ● The Student Senate considered resolutions to deny individuals carrying alcohol entrance to athletic events and to ban freshman from having cars on campus. ● BI’s cover photo marveled at the strange shadows cast in the upper level of the new circular Classroom Building, which opened that year. ● Charles King of the “Tonight Show,” known for his uncanny predictions of events like Kennedy’s assassination and conflict between Israel and Egypt, predicted “the U.S. will engage in a nuclear war in 1988 and that only the people of Wyoming will survive. It’s going to be up to Wyoming to rebuild America.”
