On September 28th through the 30th the University of Wyoming will be holding its annual family weekend.
Billed by the Cowboy Parents as “an opportunity for families to share in the UW experience and spend time with their own special student,” the weekend often coincides with the inevitable western trend of falling temperatures in the fall season. Nonetheless the town of Laramie will open up it’s newly frosted doors to families from all across the country to enjoy what the city has to offer.
Much like the spooky, formerly pagan celebration that lies not all that far beyond the periodic horizon, the weekend promises to fill the bellies of all participants. Instead of sweets though, the campus has events. Apt to the previous metaphor, Half acre will be free and open throughout the weekend to every family of a UW student just as long as they declare themselves at the front desk. After Half Acre the city of Laramie will invite families to explore the seventeen and a half miles that make up the town. Legends of Laramie, an online and interactive tour, showcases fifteen different locations of historical significance across the city.
Beyond the usual bits and pieces, the Cowboy Parents have arranged a number of special full sized treats. The Wyoming Union Store will be offering a uniform 20% off all purchases Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Downtown at 4:00 pm a mural tour will be hosted by the Shepherd Symposium which will include a discussion of Adrienne Vetter’s “Wild West Social Justice.” Rounding out Friday will be a swim meet and then a showing of Incredibles 2 in the Union Family Room from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and then to 10:30 pm.
Saturday will kick off with the 2nd annual family fun run at 9:00 am. Then, only a few hours later, the event that all those interested in contact sports and collegiate athletes have been anticipating, the 5:00 pm football match against the Boise State Broncos.
Events such as Family Weekend Tailgate and the President’s Brunch are open only to those families who registered before prior to family weekend.
Throughout the weekend many of the events are subject to change, so the Cowboy Parents recommend regularly checking their website for updates. Any questions should be directed towards the Cowboy Parents at (307) 766-5123 or send an email to cowboyparents@uwyo.edu.
