Men’s Golf off to strong start

The University of Wyoming Men’s Golf teams has played through three tournaments this fall and have finished in the top five in two so far.

The team had a high turnover rate last year with seniors no longer on the team only two players, John Murdock and Dan Starzinski, were left that had significant playing time.

The rest of the five-man teams would be filled out by freshmen. Even with the youth Head Coach Joe Jensen is overall pleased with the production of his team.

“From last years fall team to where we were ranked in the 30s nationally and won two tournaments I have one returner from the team and that is John Murdock,” said Jensen. “Dan Starzinski came in to the line up late in the spring. With that being said and having five freshmen I feel like we are working through everything, getting good work done at tournaments. I am pleased with the progress.”

Murdochk also mentioned how this was a younger team but he felt like overall they have been playing well and been a competitive team at tournaments.

In Wyoming’s first tournament of the year at Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado Wyoming finished in second place out of 16 teams and had the chance to win the tournament with a young team.

Jensen was happy that his team was able to experience that kind of success and saw an opportunity to win.

The next tournament would not go as well for the team where the ended up placing 6th out of 17 teams at the Colorado State tournament in Fort Collins, Colorado. A bright spot from the tournament would be that Starzinski was able to win the tournament individually by shooting 11 under par over the three rounds.

In their most recent tournament Wyoming would face some tough conditions during their afternoon round at the Colorado University tournament in Boulder, Colorado.

“During our afternoon round the wind picked up to about 30 to 35 miles per hour,” said Murdoch. “The winds just made that afternoon round extremely difficult.”

In the final round all four of the scores that counted towards the team score would end below par.

Murdoch would shoot eight under on the day taking him from 40th place all the way up to 6th place ending the tournament with a score of two under par. Starzinski would end tied for 10th place with an on-par score and freshman Kriby Coe-Kirkahm tied for 14th with a score of one over par.
