Cowgirls volleyball on a roll

After an impressive week playing at home, beating both CSU and Air Force, the Cowgirls volleyball team walked away with more than just two wins on their record.

Senior Reed Copeland scored her 1,000th career point this past week and junior Madi Fields got her 1,000th career dig. On top of those two feats, sophomore Jackie McBride was named the Mountain West offensive player of the week.

“It’s a confidence builder for us as a team,” Madi Fields said. “We have all the talent in the world, we’ve just got to put it together and have fun.”

During the match against CSU on Tuesday, Oct. 2 Madi had 18 digs, which set her at over 1,000 career digs for the Cowgirls.

“I knew it was sometime coming up but I didn’t know it was going to be Tuesday until my dad surprised me,” Madi said. “It’s a cool accomplishment.”

During the next match against Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 7 Reed got 18.5 points, which also set her at over 1,000 career points for the Cowgirls.

“I actually didn’t know any of that. People were congratulating me and I had no idea what people were congratulating me for,” Reed said.

This is the second big achievement Reed has had this season, after being named the Mountain West defensive player of the week back in September.

“I think just knowing that the time and effort I’m putting in to be a Wyoming Cowgirl and be the best volleyball player I can be has really paid off,” Reed said. “It was definitely a huge confidence booster.”

A day after Reed got her 1,000th point, it was announced that Jackie McBride had been named the Mountain West offensive player of the week for the second time this season. Jackie had a combined 23 kills on 48 attacks, 14 blocks and nine digs last week. She also has a .354 hitting percentage.

“I think the setters and middles have started connecting again and have instilled a little more confidence in each other,” Jackie said. “Just continuing to communicate during practice, during warm-ups, during the game; you know, just keep everything the same.”

The Cowgirls continue playing at home this week, and they have a lot of momentum going into these next games after such a solid week at home.

“I’m very excited, it’s always super fun to play in front of our home fans,” Jackie said. “We’ve had a lot of success at home and not so much on the road, so we’re excited to build on that and just look forward to the energy.”

Even though the Cowgirls had some big confidence boosters this past week, they do not want to get too comfortable because that’s the first step to letting your guard down against an opponent.

“We need to make sure we are letting each other know how to keep improving and do exactly that, keep improving,” Jackie said.

The Cowgirls took on Utah State yesterday evening and will be playing Boise State on Saturday at 1:00 pm MST at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
