Preliminary hearings for the suspects charged with the murder of Matthew Shepard were pushed back at the request of the public defenders in the case. ● Wyoming officials prepared to transport transuranic waste, mostly tools and clothes contaminated during the Cold War by elements heavier than uranium, on I-80 to a final location near Carlsbad, New Mexico. ● The UW Theater pulled together a performance of “Death of Salesman” after the lead actor broke his leg and was replaced by an understudy. ● UW began registration for its first-event semester of all online classes in the new Online Distance Learning program. ● The Wyoming Army National Guard prepared to deploy two units to Germany for engineer training.

While other universities around the U.S. were establishing Afro-American studies departments in response to a growing call for the representation of African American history, sociology and literature, UW declined to create a “black curriculum,” citing lack of student interest. ● The Student Senate passed a resolution that women at least 21 years of age should have the right to live off campus. ● UW’s president hosted an eighth-annual “Press Day” to celebrate open communication and the power of radio and TV. ● Forum contributor William Hart lamented the government’s inability to adapt to technological advances and social change while protecting personal freedoms. “The government of America is old and worn out,” he wrote. “It cannot cope with modern civilization.”
