The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team will have their second home duel against the United States Air Force Academy (USAF) Falcons on Friday at 5 p.m.
The Cowgirls are currently 2-0 with victories over the University of Northern Colorado, and New Mexico State University. The Falcons are 1-1 after a recent invite at Colorado Mesa, with a victory over Colorado Mesa and a loss against BYU.
As the beginning of this 2018-19 season starts to progress, the Wyoming cowboys are looking to make a big splash in the WAC and win another championship this season.
The Cowgirls are looking to keep their win streak alive as the cowboys are hoping to start off their season with a victory. The last time these two teams met in a duel the cowboys broke Air Force’s three-year winning streak in their head-to-head series. The cowboys won 163-135, and the cowgirls also won 173-122. Getting a win in Colorado Springs will be huge for these poke swimmers and divers and give them a huge confidence boost for the beginning of this season.
Cool temperatures are coming to Wyoming but that isn’t cooling down any of the cowgirl standouts who are on fire. Senior diver CeeJay Harris absolutely dominated the diving board against New Mexico State with first place finishes in both the 1-meter (262.35 points) and 3-meter (261.08 points) dives. Another standout for the cowgirls is Freshman Lainee Jones. Two weeks ago, she was awarded the Mountain West swimmer of the week. She also had two first place finishes against New Mexico State in the 50-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard butterfly.
Air Force defeated the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, 245-147, while coming up short against the BYU Cougars, 254-139. Overall on the weekend, AF had three event wins, while finishing in the top-5 in each of the 21 swimming events. The Falcons hope to get their second victory of the season for their first home duel. We will see if the pokes can ride the wave of victory and not drown in Colorado Springs.
This will be an exciting night for the Wyoming swimming and diving teams. Even though this meet won’t be at home, the pokes have a very good chance to come out of the water with a big victory and to fly over the Air Force Falcons.
