The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team beat the University of Las Vegas Lady Rebels 2 – 1 in overtime this past Sunday in Laramie.
The Cowgirls were led by sophomore Madison Barrick who had two goals. One of which was in the 99th minute to earn the Cowgirls the win in overtime.
“Madi (Barrick) brings so much energy to our team and battles hard every time she gets in,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “She puts herself in very good spots to finish. It’s awesome because she is coming off an injury and has had to get fit through the season, which isn’t always easy.”
Both teams were able to get shots off early in the game, with senior Annika Clayton having her shot blocked. Over the next 20 minutes the Cowgirls outshot UNLV 3 – 1.
In the 40th minute, off an assist from freshman Adalyn Vergara, Barrick put in the first goal of the game.
“We started fast, but it was tough not to get a goal in the first half. I thought we played really well and deserved to have one go in,” coach Cuadrado said. “It was one of our better performances and we played a full game from start to finish.”
Despite outshooting UNLV 7 – 2 in the second half, the Cowgirls ended regulation tied 1 – 1 after a late penalty kick goal from UNLV senior Kaila Brinkman.
“Obviously, it was a tough call at the end with three minutes left,” coach Cuadrado said. “To give up the goal and to see the response from the team to keep playing. It was a great game.”
The Cowgirls had two early shots in overtime that were both saved by keeper Emberly Sevilla. As the clock was winding down and it began to look like the game was going into a second overtime, Barrick put in her second goal of the game to barely clench the win.
The Cowgirls end their regular season this Friday, October 26 in the Border War against Colorado State at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. This will also be senior appreciation day.
