Research conference highlights partnership with UW

Beginning tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, Oct. 25 and Friday, Oct. 26 in the UW Conference Center the university will be hosting an event in partnership with the National Atmospheric Research Center (NCAR).  The hope for this event is to strengthen the university’s relationship with NCAR and make students and faculty aware of the opportunities available to them.

There are an anticipated 120 people of both faculty and staff participating in portions of this conference titled, “Leveraging the UW-NCAR Partnership for Breakthroughs in Research, Education, Engagement and Economic Development,” over the course of the two days.  Both NCAR and distinguished university leadership will be in attendance including President Laurie Nichols, Provost Kate Miller, and Vice President for Research and Economic Development Ed Synakowski.

Though this conference, and the university’s partnership with NCAR as a whole, tends not to be at the forefront of the earth sciences department’s advertising, the partnership offers students, graduates and faculty many opportunities not found anywhere else in the nation.  “NCAR employs close to 750 scientists,” said UW professor and co-chair of the Wyoming-NCAR Allocation Panel Bryan Shader, “there’s opportunities for graduates to find careers with them, so the more aware they are of the great graduates and programs we have the better NCAR will help our graduates in the future”.

One such opportunity is the University of Wyoming sponsored NCAR supercomputing center in Cheyenne, which allows faculty and students opportunities that few other universities have.

“New internships will be announced and I hope people become more aware and realize what’s out there, and once they begin to explore and need collaboration they can turn to NCAR,” Mentioned Shader in regards to the conference. This conference is being held in hopes to open the eyes of faculty and students to the university’s relationship with NCAR.

“NCAR has a special relationship with the University of Wyoming,” Shader said. “They have tremendous scientists and I wish more students were aware of these opportunities.” It is largely through this conference that Shader and many other faculty members are hoping to strengthen the relationship with NCAR and make more students aware of the unique opportunities available to them.

Scheduled events at the conference will include discussions about STEM education and engagement and research support on Thursday. Fridays events feature lunch and lightning talks regarding research taking place at UW, opportunities for researchers and students to connect and a presentation on accessing NWSC resources.
