On Friday, October 26th the University of Wyoming cowgirl soccer team will take on Colorado State University in the infamous border war. This battle will take place in Laramie, Wyoming at the Louis S. Madrid sports complex at 3 p.m.
This will be the last game of the Cowgirl’s regular season before the Mountain West Championships kick off on October 30th. The cowgirls have had an outstanding season this year and will be going into this game with a three-game winning streak.
The history of this historic event screams brown and gold. Out of the last 5 seasons that these two teams have faced off, Wyoming has one every single time. Since the season of 2013, the cowgirls have beaten the CSU rams every time they have faced off against each other.
The Wyoming cowgirls are currently 11-3-4 and are 6-2-2 in the Mountain West conference. The cowgirls haven’t had any losses at home this year, which is very beneficial for the moral and support of these women soccer players. Since they are playing CSU at home, they will have very good odds in finishing with a victory.
A goal in the 99th minute of the first overtime by sophomore Madison Barrick helped the Cowgirl soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the UNLV Rebels on Sunday, October 21st. The 11 wins ties for second most in school history and the six league wins is the most since the 2016 season. Brittney Stark had a game-high five shots with one on goal followed by Barrick with three. It would be the second straight two goal game for her. Four cowgirls logged all 99 minutes for the match. Wyoming outshot the Rebels 16-6 and had two corner kicks compared to one by UNLV. Salazar played 45 minutes and one save while Lee played in 54 minutes.
The Colorado State Rams are currently 6-8-4 and 3-5-2 in the Mountain West conference. Their win to loss ratio isn’t too optimistic if the they hope to beat to pokes and have a good conference championship. However, they are doing a lot better than last season and are coming off of a great win against Nevada on Oct. 21st. They have a lot of momentum going into Friday’s game in Laramie, but we will see if it is enough to stop the cowgirls.
Win streaks, an excellent record, and five straight victories in the border war all make the Cowgirl soccer team seem unstoppable. They are on fire and don’t look to cool down any time soon. Wyoming looks to not just win this battle but the war as well.
