Famous saxophonist to perform tonight

Music fans can rejoice today because a celebrated saxophonist, Claude Delangle, will be performing tonight Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Buchanon Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The event will be free and open to the public.

Delangle is considered by many to be on of the greatest contemporary saxophonists in the world. Since 1986, he has performed with Ensemble Intercontemporain that is based out of Paris. He also has appeared with many famous orchestras such as the London BBC and Radio France orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist.

“International saxophonist Claude Delangle is one of the most important musicians of his generation and a master of the saxophone,” said Scott Turpen, UW Department of Music chair, in an interview for UW News. “His position as professor of saxophone at the Paris Conservatory was first held by the inventor of the saxophone himself, Adolphe Sax, in the 19th century.”

Delangle is known for his unique take on French music that presents new and unique styles while retaining a sense of the original. This is apparent in his recordings for BIS, Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Erato and Verany.

Beyond being an accomplished soloist, Delangle also researches detailed acoustics of the saxophone at the Musical Acoustic Laboratories at the University of Paris.

The following day, a master class will also be held by Delangle on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts recital hall. Like the performance today, Oct. 31, the master class will be free and open to the public.

“We are honored to have Professor Delangle on the UW campus to perform and work with our students in a master class,” Turpen said in his interview with UW News.
