The UW Alert system for mobile phones, one of the safety measures implemented after campus safety was reassessed following the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, successfully underwent its third test. ● BI ran an election guide for students. The editorial staff endorsed Mike Enzi for U.S. Senate and Gary Trauner for the House. ● Professional stand-up comedian and UW alumnus Doug Hecox released his latest album. Hecox, a Rawlins native, was vice president of ASUW during his time at the university. ● GameStop opened on Grand Avenue. ● The Cowboys bucked a five-game losing streak with a 35-10 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs.

Police located Brad Smith, a UW accounting student who went missing along with $3,991 from Laramie’s Mingles Liquor Store, at a Little America hotel near Green Rover. Several days later, 22-year-old Smith was charged with grand larceny. ● According to a five-year analysis done by the Office of the Registrar, German 2030 had the highest withdrawal rate of any class offered by the university, at 19 percent, closely followed by Social Sciences 4250 at 17 percent and Computer Science 1010 with 16.3 percent. ● A UW employee was attacked on campus. She had just exited her car at 6 a.m. in the Fine Arts building parking lot when “a tall, muscular white man of college age” grabbed her and pushed her into a wall before running off.

UW alumnus and decorated WWII pilot Lt. General Samuel Phillips was appointed director of NASA’s Apollo Manned Lunar Landing Program. ● A group of “concerned citizens” wrote a letter to the editor to express their disapproval of the continuation of the Vietnam War, lack of choice of presidential candidates and the “highly undemocratic” two-party nomination system. ● UW President William Carlson spoke with students about the problems caused by “lack of funds,” including a shortage of married student housing and the elimination of free x-rays and prescription drugs at Student Health. ● BI issued an apology for misspelling a name and wrote the staff “serves 20 lashes with a hickory baton.”
