It’s spooky season and everyone should be prepared for a frightening sight as the University of Wyoming prepared their worst zombies and witches for Halloween night. The fraternity row, sorority row, Washakie Dining Center and Student Media participated in the annual Safe Treat event on Wednesday night from four to seven. Everywhere you went was a thrilling, spooky sight that one could never forget.
Phi Sigma Rho, the engineering sorority, participated in Safe Treat by conducting a candy corn ring toss. Because Phi Sigma Rho does not have a house of their own, the ring toss was in the bottom of Washakie Dining Center along with Kappa Kappa Gamma. All other fraternities and sororities that participated held their events in their Greek houses.
“We painted wine bottles to look like candy corn,” giggled UW freshman and Phi Sigma Rho sorority sister Kiana Lotvedt. “There were a few students who showed up, but it was mostly little kids. There was a two year old in a donut costume and it inspired me to be a donut next year. I am not joking.”
Lotvedt participated in the Halloween tradition of dressing up as well. Being a huge vine and meme girl, she decided to dress up as the man who holds a chicken and a cardboard sign with “love” written on it, and says “love yourself, accept yourself” to people passing on the streets in New York. Though none of the little children really knew who Lotvedt was impersonating, she got multiple giggles from her fellow Phi Sigma Rho sisters and classmates.
“Since my family isn’t that close, my sorority sisters have become my family,” shared Lotvedt. “One of my sisters thought she saw somebody she knew and she kept calling her name like “Reagan! Reagan!” The little girl’s mom was following her and she said, “Her name is Emily.” It was so funny!”
The night did not only consist of ring tosses and giggles for Lotvedt, though. The Purge series, her favorite of all time, and the Saw were her choice of thrillers to watch in the spirit of Halloween. She even learned a fun fact that the entirety of Saw was filmed in one room. However, that wasn’t the scariest part of the night. Homework had to be done and, according to Lotvedt, that’s the scariest thing out there.
Safe Treat and Halloween as a whole were a huge success for the Laramie community to come together with the UW students through fun tricks and sweet treats. The haunted houses, cookie making and other hocus pocus activities were overflowing with sugar filled kids and smiling parents. Also, new ideas are already being shared among student participants on how to make the event even more exciting next year.
Lotvedt herself has a few pointers for next year including more of an array of events and more organization concerning the locations of the activities to result in more space for the fun. However, she expressed her gratitude of the event for offering a time of close bonding among the University community and, most importantly, her sorority sisters.
