As has been for the past century and a half, the first Tuesday in November is Election Day. This year, voters will turn out to cast their ballots on Nov. 6 at polling locations around the country.
The first step to vote is to register. To register in Albany County, a voter must be 18 or older on Election Day, a citizen of the U.S., have photo ID, be a resident of Albany County and the precinct he or she registers in and must not be a convicted felon or have been judged mentally incompetent. Those who voted in the 2016 General Election or 2018 Primary Election are still registered to vote.
Accepted identification is a Wyoming driver license or one of the following: driver’s license from a different state; ID card issued by local, state, or federal governmental agency; U.S. passport; school ID card with photograph; or military ID card. Voters also have the option of presenting a combination of other forms of ID (full list available at CO.Albany.WY.US/voter-registration.aspx).
A registration form can be filled out in person at the County Clerk’s Office, located at 525 E. Grand Ave. Suite 202 in Laramie, or at the polls on Election Day. Voters can also print and fill out a form in advance to expedite in-person registration, available at SOSWY.state.WY.US/Forms/Elections/General/VoterRegistrationForm.pdf. Note the form must be signed in front of the Clerk. Voters can also register and vote absentee (not at the polls) at the County Courthouse before Election Day.
Albany County is separated into two Wyoming State Senate districts and five Wyoming House districts. Voters can only vote for candidates within their district. The county is also separated into eight smaller precincts; voters must cast their ballots at the polling place in the precinct where they live. See page 4 for a map of precincts and the polling place for each. The polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, Election Day.
This year is a midterm election, meaning a non-presidential election. On the ballot across Wyoming are races for Governor, U.S. Senate and House and several state offices. State Senate and Legislature are on the ballot by districts. On the ballot in Albany County are seats for Commissioner, Sheriff, Treasurer and other county offices. Those who live in Laramie will also vote for Laramie City Council members by ward.
