In the last two games both Sean Chambers, quarterback, and Nico Evans, running back, have both rushed for over 100 yards in Wyoming last two games against Colorado State and San Jose State.
Chambers rushed for 101 yards in his first start against CSU and for 129 yards this past weekend. Evans rushed for over 150 yards in both games with 176 against CSU and 187 against San Jose State.
“I guess some are calling us the dynamic duo, so that is pretty cool,” Chambers said. “Being back there with him is an honor. He is a really good player and if I can help him out that would be alright.”
While Chambers has been a starter for the past two games Evans has been Wyoming’s main running back when he has been healthy. Evans has rushed for 1353 yards so far this season, which leads the conference.
“Its been pretty cool, I hold myself to a high standard,” Evans said on rushing for over 150 yards in each of the last two games. “I want it to be normal that I rush for over 150 yards, I do not want that to be a surprise. Stats are cool but I have been happy to get the wins.”
In Wyoming’s latest 24-9 victory over San Jose State, both Evans and Chambers rushed for a touchdown. Evans would score on a 58-yard rush and Chambers scored on a 64-yard rush. Chambers would also throw a 20 yards pass to tight end Austin Fort for a touchdown.
The Wyoming offense that was struggling to move the ball consistently has found success in the past two games with a rush-heavy offense. Against San Jose State, Wyoming would gain only 51 yards through the air on 8 pass attempts but rushed for 424 yards. That was also due to the fact that high winds and a mixture of snow and rain made the passing game more difficult Head Coach Craig Bohl said in his weekly press conference. Chambers said that this was his first time experiencing snow during a football game.
There have also been recent changes on the offensive line in the past few games. Bohl said he has seen the offensive line get a better push up front that has allowed the Cowboys to control the line of scrimmage. Wyoming has rushed for 715 yards in the last two games while allowing only 91 yards on the ground. Evans also has seen players finishing plays more during these past two games.
“We have put in guys who are willing to pun in their best effort,” Evans said about the changes to the offensive line. “We are able to finish now. That was the problem that we had at the beginning of the season. Finishing plays, finish blocks, and finishing runs. We have gotten a lot better at that over these last two games.”
Wyoming will have their second bye week of the season before they face Air Force Academy on Nov. 17 in Laramie. This will be the final game to be played in War Memorial this season.
This will allow Wyoming to get their fresh legs before entering a final stretch of games in which they have to win both of their final games if Wyoming wants to reach bowl eligibility.
