The Wyoming men’s and women’s cross country team both finished strong in the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Provo, Utah on Friday, Nov. 9.
The Cowboys finished in 6th place out of 17 teams while the Cowgirls finished 12th out of 20 teams. Both placings were an improvement from a year ago and for the Cowboys it was the best regional finish in school history.
The Cowboys would score 149 points on the 10-kilometer course. With their strong showing in the race, Wyoming was announced as one of the 31 teams to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships on in Madison Wisconsin on Nov. 17.
Wyoming was given an at-large bid and will once again have a chance to prove themselves on a course that they raced at earlier this year.
The men had three runners qualify individually for all-region honors by finishing among the top 25. Paul Roberts, who finished first at the Mountain West Conference Championships, recorded the fastest finish for Wyoming athlete at a Mountain Regional race with a time of 29:27.4 and finished 11th in the field of runners. Chris Henery was the second fastest runner for Wyoming with a time of 29:39.3 good for 17th place in the race. Harry Ewing finished in 21st place with a time of 29:47.1 rounding out the Wyoming all-region runners.
Rounding out the rest of the race for Wyoming Cowboys would be Michael Downey who ran the course in 30:21.6 and placed 37th while Daniel Hintz placed 63rd with a time of 31:02.3.
For the Cowgirls, Ashly Bock placed the highest at 37th with a time of 21:01.8 on the 6-kilometer course. Other cowgirls placing for Wyoming were Katelyn Mitchem, Solana Quistorff, Kacey Doner and Emily Person who posted a times of 21:13.2, 21:30.4, 21:32.0 and 21:51.2 respectively. Thos times were good enough to place 45th, 65th, 70th, and 83rd.
While this marked the end of the season for the Cowgirls, the men will be back in action this weekend on Nov. 17 when they race in NCAA championships.
