International Education Week events taking place now

The Global Engagement Office is sponsoring events including country displays, films, presentations on scholarship opportunities, photo contests and other activities with provided food and refreshments for the University of Wyoming’s International Education Week, Nov. 10-17.

“This week showcases the wonderful diversity that we have on campus and highlights all of the opportunities our students have to interact with folks outside of their own culture,” Director of International Students & Scholars, E. Jill Johnson said. “It celebrates not only our international students sharing their lives with us, but also the opportunities our students from the US have to study and do research or internships overseas.”

Events kicked off on Nov. 10 with a “Viking Economics in Iceland” program spotlight at the Hilton Garden Inn. On Monday, scholarship opportunities for Education Abroad were presented along with a country display and a mini conference about the heritage tourism from Scotland to Disneyland.

Tuesday was jam packed with a University of Glasgow session/student panel at the Honors College, a marketing Education Abroad Experience Professionally presentation, a presentation on opportunities with the Peace Corps, College of Business Education Abroad Opportunities student panel and a watch party for the film, “Ties that Bind.”

Events today include: a passport fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. where students from UW and community members can apply for their passports at the University, China’s country spotlight at Cheney Center Basement Lounge with Panda Express being served, University of Graz International Summer School, Austria spotlight at 11 a.m. to noon with pizza served, voting for the international photo contest and education abroad 101 in Cheney room 24.

Thursday features the SLCE Service Project, Spain’s country spotlight with tapas being served in Cheney room 129, the photo contest reception taking place at 4 to 6 p.m., a film and discussion of “SALERO” at the Berry Center room 138 and the program spotlight of “Aboriginal Skies.”

On Friday, events will kick off with “Tips, Tricks, and Travel Apps,” in Cheney room 129, with donuts being served. Other events and seminars will take place and from noon to 1 p.m., there will be a College of Education lunch and panel in the LRCC Lobby. Two spotlight programs of Harry Potter in the United Kingdom and Aboriginal Skies will take place and at 7 p.m., international night with a lip sync and dance competitions with prices awarded and pizza being served will take place in the Union Gardens.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday for the etiquette dinner featuring Southeast Asia in the Union Ballroom.

“We have great programs, both in Laramie and overseas, that give students the global perspective that is valued by many of today’s employers,” Director of Global Engagement, Carrie Hesco said.

International Education Week is a collective initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. The events and activities are sponsored by UW’s Global Engagement Office, which included the International Students and Scholars Officer, the Education Abroad Office and the English Language Center.
