10 years ago…

950 Wyoming National Guard troops were slated to be deployed to Kuwait in the spring, where they would help protect vehicles traveling between Kuwait and Iraq. ● Students performed “Until Someone Wakes Up,” a 1992 play exploring the effects of sexual assault. ● Sixteen students participated in a “Mr. Wyoming” mock men’s beauty pageant to raise money for the Albany County Red Cross. ● UW terminated the employment of head football coach Joe Glenn after the team finished its fourth losing season in six years. ● The University began to administer teacher evaluations online instead of with bubble sheets.

 

20 years ago…

A preliminary hearing for Aaron McKinney turned up enough evidence for him to stand trial for robbery, kidnapping and first-degree murder in connection to the death of Matthew Shepard. ● Thanksgiving break started Tuesday. ● University HR adjusted its job screening policy to align with federal affirmative action requirements designed to increase employment of protected groups, including racial minorities, women, people with disabilities and veterans. ● UW’s School of Pharmacy received a $25,000 donation from Kmart.

 

50 years ago…

Student Health treated 300 to 350 students for “Hong Kong Flu,” a strain of influenza responsible for a pandemic that killed 1 million people worldwide. The University chose not to suspend classes for fear that students would travel home and infect other communities. ● UW officials cited extensive theft as the reason for beginning to lock the men’s dorms at night in addition to the women’s. Students continued to send angry letters to the editor about the decision. ● Student groups planned a fundraiser for starving children in Biafra, a nation that seceded from Nigeria in 1967 and would fail three years later. ● BI’s Forum for guest commentary featured “more on the Cowboy-Hippie chasm.” ● Construction continued on the new Biological Sciences building.
