The global financial crisis was felt in Wyoming; the state’s investment portfolio lost more than $1 billion over the course of two months. ● Graduate student Sherry Adrianos worked with other UW researchers to artificially replicate spider silk to use in equipment for advanced surgeries, protective clothing and parachutes. ● Men shaved their beards for charity after “No-Shave November.”

 

20 years ago…

Students organized a “Day Without Violence” across the state to remember Polly Klaas, Matthew Shepard and other victims of violence. ● UW mourned the loss of outdoor adventure-lover and chemical engineering professor David Cooney, who died at his home at age 58. ● Lake trout were discovered causing a disruption in the ecosystems of Yellowstone’s lakes, preying on the native cutthroat trout. ● The Fairness in Music Licensing Act, sponsored by Wyoming Sen. Craig, Thomas, released small businesses from royalty obligations for broadcasting copyrighted music in their establishments.

 

50 years ago…

UW won the Bronze Boot in a football game against CSU. Cadets at both schools planned to make the contest for the trophy an annual tradition. ● Several speakers were slated to speak at UW in separate appearances: psychology professor and UFO scholar Ronald Sprinkle, Wyoming Sen. Gale McGee and Thailand ambassador His Excellency Bunchana Atthakor. ●

“Hong Kong Flu,” a strain of influenza responsible for a pandemic that killed 1 million people worldwide, infected approximately 800 students, twice the previous week’s amount. Student Health recommended students self-treat with aspirin. ● UW submitted its budget request to Wyoming Gov. Stanley K. Hathaway: $26,096,987, the bare minimum needed to operate the University for the year, according to UW President William Carlson. ● A BI columnist called for adding Police Science and Black Culture and History courses to the catalogue for a proposed interim or January semester.
