SafeRide served its 150,000th rider, French international student Alive Mielcarek, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship as a gift from UW President Tom Buchanan. ● BI’s Entertainment writer gave Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” sequel, “New Moon,” a glowing review, writing the series gives readers “a chance to live vicariously through an almost unbelievable romance.” ● The Wyoming House of Representatives passed a bill banning smoking in public buildings.

30 years ago…

A snowstorm coming from Alaska buried campus under two feet of snow and sent temperatures plunging to 37 degrees below zero, setting a record for most snowfall for days in a row and coldest temperature. ● Laramie’s local satanic temple, The Alien Elite, circulated pamphlets on how to become a member. ● Reignited controversy over the Roe vs. Wade court decision legalizing abortion filled BI’s opinion page. ● A bill to legalize selling beer at UW football games died in the state House of Representatives.

50 years ago…

UW’s enrollment increased to 7,103 students, of which 25 percent were married and males outnumbered females nearly two to one. ● BI interviewed “Yellow Submarine” producer and scriptwriter Al Brodax on the recently released Beatles animated movie.     ● Antarctica “wouldn’t be a bad place to live if there were only some women around,” said a Botany senior and participant in an ongoing UW geology expedition to the continent. ● A letter-to-the-editor writer called “enough is enough” concerning antagonistic and unsportsmanlike behavior between UW and CSU students.
