High-demand string quartet to play tonight

The Grammy-nominated “Danish String Quartet” will perform tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for Performing Arts concert hall.

Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, the quartet will feature works by Beethoven, Mozart and some traditional Nordic folk music during their time at the University of Wyoming.

“The Quartet has been performing programs encompassing the vast string quartet repertoire of the classical canon in addition to new compositions (especially by Scandinavian composers) and their own arrangements of the folk music on which they were raised,” the quartet’s Worldwide Press Representative, Hannah Goldschlack-Wolf, said in an email to the Branding Iron. “Each performance is a snapshot of their unique history and artistic sensibilities, and the audience invariably responds with great enthusiasm at the Quartet’s genuine love of music-making.”

Returning to campus for the first time since 2014, the group was able to squeeze UW into their 20-day North America tour. The group also visited the Grammy’s during their time overseas after being nominated this year for the first of their five-disc PRISM series on ECM records.

The quartet’s 2017-2018 North American tour included more than 30 performance across 17 states. They made numerous debuts at festivals and collaborated with Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen for performances in Ravinia and cellist Jakob Koranyi as part of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.  They also toured Denmark, Norway, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and additionally performed in Australia and Asia.

Violaist Asbjorn Norgaard and violinists Rune Tonsgaard Sorensen and Frederik Oland made their debut in 2002. The only Norweign of the group, cellist Fredrick Schoyen Sjölin, joined the group in 2008.

Since 2002 the group has performed mostly Scandinavian music while creating special projects to reach new audiences. The group also created the DSQ Festival, which takes place in an informal and small venue in Copenhagen in 2007.

According to the quartet’s website, Oland, Sorenson and Norgaard met at a music summer camp where they made music and played soccer as children. When they began to study classical chamber music as teenagers, they were mentored by Tim Frederiksen of Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Academy of music.

The “Danish String Quartet” has won numerous awards, including the Vagn Holmboe String Quartet competition in the Netherlands, the Eleventh London International String Quartet Competition and the Carl Nielsen Prize, the highest cultural honor in Denmark. The quartet was named as BBC Radio Three New Generation Artists in 2013 and appointed to The Bowers Program.

Tickets cost $15 for the public, $12 for senior citizens and UW faculty and staff and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk. The performance is part of the UW Presents’ spring concert series.
