Tomorrow, the 7220 Fine Arts & Lectures Committee will be hosting their first annual Cowboy Con event that has been in the works for nearly a year.
In the spirit of the famous San Diego Comic Con, Cowboy Con has been modeled to be the “comic book event of the year” here on campus. In planning this event, the Fine Arts and Lecturers Committee of 7220 Entertainment have created this event to reach out to all groups of people around the community and on campus.
“We thought this event might appeal to groups in Laramie who typically don’t get their interests represented at events like this. We are trying to bring in elements of gaming, comic book culture, books, pop culture, etc. that usually don’t get catered to,” said Fine Arts and Lectures coordinator Amanda Byzewski.
“I’ve been the coordinator for Fine Arts and Lectures since last year and we talked about doing a comic con style event at that time because they are something I am personally familiar with. We talked about an event like this since last school year, but we knew it would take a while to plan,” said Byzewski.
As a tribute to comics and pop-culture, Cowboy Con will feature activities such as movie screenings, panelist events, and so much more. Cowboy Con will take place in the upper level of the Wyoming Union from 11am-9pm. The event is free and open to the public, with free food also available throughout the day.
“Attendees can expect an event that celebrates pop culture and special interests they may have including movies, TV shows, comic books, and other interests. There will also be giveaways throughout the day and free food. We hope to make this an annual event, so we want to start the first year off with a bang, boom, and pow!” said Byzewski.
Cowboy Con will be featuring panels with comic artist Larissa Hughs at 1pm and American Horror Story actress Naomi Grossman at 5pm in the Union Center Ballroom. Attendees will be able to meet these two for pictures and autographs throughout the day. Some newer films based on comics, including Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse and Venom will be showing at noon and 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
Beyond these main events, Cowboy Con will be featuring a cosplay contest at 4pm with chances to win cash prizes. Throughout the day there will be vendors, a Kids’ Corner with crafts and the American Heritage Society will be featuring pop culture items from their collection. The event will also be featuring board games, a Fifa tournament and sessions of Dungeons and Dragons from 12pm-4pm. Beginning at 5pm, there will be a Harry Potter trivia contest, followed by Marvel trivia at 6pm.
