The garage punk band Death Cow will bring a new, grungy sound to Laramie on Monday evening at 8 p.m. at the Green House on Grand Avenue.
Bred in Lincoln, Nebraska, this will be Death Cow’s first time in Laramie. The band will bring a new style to the stage with their incoherent screaming with pop melodies.
“We want our music to describe the mood of getting off a long day of work and banging your head against a wall for hours until you pass out in to a blissful sleep,” a member of Death Cow wrote in an email to the Branding Iron. “We try to mix heavy guitar riffs (that’s the death part) with western country (that’s the cow part).”
The band members each bring their own personal styles to the set but all share inspiration from ‘90s acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer and the Pixies. Sadgasm, Weird Al Yankovic, Death Cab for Cutie and Super Ghost are other influences on the band’s sound.
Audience members can expect an up-beat, fast tempo concert with a lot of head banging during and between songs.
Singer and guitarist Connor Worden and drummer Sam Crisler shared a residence hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln their freshmen year. After many jam sessions at the Crisler family residence, Crisler’s sister Mari joined the band and the three played their first show in August 2016. Guitarist Reed Tiwald from Mari’s indie pop band The Way Out joined that fall to make the band lineup that is today.
The name “Death Cow” came from a novel Worden was writing his freshman year of college. The story was about a cow that came back from the dead to murder all of its creators. The novel remains unfinished but the name lives on.
“The first song we ever made was about a cow named Sacramento Jones and it is the title track on our LP that we released in June,” the band’s statement read.
Death Cow released its debut LP, Slow Down in June 2018 and are planning to release another EP in October. The band is also traveling outside their Nebraska state borders to tour in Colorado, Texas and the East Coast this year.
Death Cow will be playing alongside bands Super Ultra and Gentlemen at the Back Table Monday night. A $5 to $7 donation is requested to get the touring bands down the road.
