After posting a seventh place finish with a score of 853(+1) at the Grand Canyon tournament, the University of Wyoming Men’s golf team moved on to the Oregon Duck invitational.
The Oregon Duck invitational opened on Monday, March 25th at the Emerald Valley Golf Club.
The young Cowboys golf team had an excellent first day at the invitational, compiling a score of 588(+12). They sat in fifth place going after having a successful start, eleven strokes behind the tournament leaders Oregon and Oregon state.
The Cowboy senior John Murdock and freshman Kirby Coe-Kirkham each posted a strong score of 144 on par leading the Cowboys into the second day of the tournament. The young freshman Tyler Severin was close behind the two with 148(+4). Just five strokes behind Severin, the junior Dan Starzinski ended the day with 153(+9) along with freshman Jimmy Dales scoring of 154(+10).
The Oregon Duck tournament wrapped up on Tuesday, March 26th. The day provided a challenge for the cowboys as they did not finish as strong as they would have liked. They had a ninth place finish, posting a final score of 894(+30).
However, the UW Golf director, Joe Jenson, was not deterred by their final score. In an interview with the UW athletics, he was rather optimistic about the way his team pulled through.
“This was a very, very difficult golf course here at the Oregon tournament. Our freshmen struggled with the difficulty of the course today, but I’m really proud of the way they competed throughout this tournament.”
John Murdock had another great tournament finish, obtaining his fourth top ten finish with a score of 218(+2), tying him for 9th place with Oregon’s Sam Foust and Edwin Yi.
The Cowboy golf team will continue their season with the Cowboy Classic on Monday, April 8th in Chandler, Arizona.
