Tuesday, April 9th-John Murdock had an outstanding, record breaking performance as the UW Cowboys golf team wrapped up the Cowboys Classic golf tournament in Chandler, Arizona.
Going into the second day, the team sat in eighth place out of twenty teams in the tournament, posting a score of 572(-4). They sat just two strokes behind Stephen F. Austin.
Individually, the Cowboys were in good positions out the 120 golfers that competed. Murdock, after having an excellent first day on the golf course, sat in first place, tied with UCLA’s Cole Madey, recording a score of 136(-8) after two rounds. Junior Dan Starzinski, not far behind, posted a score of 140(-4), just four strokes from Murdock, tieing for 15th. Freshman Tyler Severin was not too far behind the two with a score of 145(+1), placing himself in 49th place.
Murdock stood fast on the second day, keeping his 1st place position to the end with three rounds under par. He placed himself among four other cowboys who have recorded multiple tournament first-place wins. His score of 203(-13) was also the second best in the school’s history, just behind the record score set himself in 2017.
Starzinski, himself, also had good day out on the golf course, improving his position to 14th place with a final score 211(-5). Severin dropped two places with a final score of 219(+3). Freshman Carl Underwood also dropped two places down at 94th, to record a score of 227(+11) with Sophomore Kirby Coe-Kirkham just one stroke behind him with a score of 228(+12).
The team as a whole was on fire the second day, collectively recording a round of 282(-6). In return, they had the best round day of the twenty teams who attended including the tournament leader UCLA. Their successful day allowed them to jump four places to fourth place. The Cowboys finished the Classic with a final score of 854(-10).
After having a phenomenal performance at the Cowboy Classic, Murdock earned just his second Mountain West’s golfer of the week. His first honor was after his record breaking performance at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2017.
The Cowboys hope to continue improve at the BYU Cougar Classic on April 19th in Provo, Utah.
