The Wyoming Track and Field team competed in California and Colorado this weekend as a group of middle-distance and distance runners represented the Cowboys at the Stanford Invitation on Friday, and the majority of the team to UNC in Greeley to compete in the Invitational.
The runners that are representing Wyoming are Harry Ewing in the 3,000m steeplechase, Christopher Henry and Paul Roberts in the 10,000-meter run, Ricky Faure and Bryce Ailshie in the 800m, and Michael Downey in the 5,000m. Ewing had a personal best time of 8:42.72 in the 3,000m steeplechase breaking the record which was 8:43.14 in 1979 by Joseph Nzau. Ewing ended up placing seventh in the invite. Henry had a personal best in the 10,000m run with a time of 29:24.74 placing 19th, and Roberts also ran the 10k and finished 29th in the invite. Downey ran in the 5,000m race with a time of 14:28.69 placing 14th overall in his heat. Faure ran in the 800m run and placed 37th overall with a time of 1:54.75.
At the Greeley Invitational Jerayah Davis set a school record to win the women’s long jump mark of 20-10.75, which was previously held by Patricia Miller at 20-4. Ja’la Henderson placed second in the long jump with a personal best of 20-5. The cowboys ended up taking three of the top four spots in the hammer throw with Eric McArthur winning the event and Kirk Unland placed third while Hap Frketich took fourth. The Cowgirls took the top four spots in the women’s 5,000m run and for the cowboys William Nolan won the triple jump with a personal best of 48-11.5.
Last week Harry Ewing and Kacey Doner were named Mountain West Track Athletes of the week. Ewing won the 3,000m steeplechase at CSU and finished the race with a time of 9:14.20. He finished 10.44 seconds ahead of second place. Kacey Doner also won the 3,000m steeplechase at CSU and finished with a 10:42.83, which is her personal best.
The UW Track and Field teams next meet will be held at Arizona State University on April 5th.
