The 7220 Entertainment Fine Arts and Lectures Committee will be hosting an Art Show and Poetry Slam in the Union Garden Wednesday night, with the art show at 7 p.m. and the poetry slam at 8 p.m.
A “Best in Show” prize will be awarded for the art show and prizes for first, second and third place prizes in the poetry slam. Students competing will receive a cash prize that has yet to be announced.
“It is important to have a poetry slam so students can use speech to express themselves and present it to an audience who wants to hear these different ideas,” Fine Arts and Lectures Events Coordinator Amanda Byzewski said.
The 7220 Entertainment Fine Arts and Lectures Committee is expecting 13 pieces of artwork to be displayed from six students who submitted their work. All art work will be an array of mediums, styles and techniques.
“This is a chance for students to display their art outside of the art department and reach out to a new audience,” Byzewski said.
This event is free and open for the public, however only students may submit art or present poetry. Free food and drink will be providing to anyone attending the event.
The judges for the art show are all the members of the Fine Arts and Lectures Committee. For the poetry slam contest, the judges will include one member of the Fine Arts and Lectures Committee and the other two judges will be the winners of the poetry slam from last semester. The judges for the poetry slam are evaluating the winner based on the content and audience enjoyment of each poem presented.
7220 Entertainment is an organization consisting of five committees that are responsible for providing the UW campus with amazing events. First, 7220 Entertainment picks an artist, act or event that they would like to bring to campus. The organization then plans the logistics of the event to maximize the experience of all attendees whether they are students or part of the Laramie community.
With the help of their marketing team, 7220 Entertainment then works to promote their upcoming events to the community. Lastly, 7220 Entertainment produces the event for everyone and performs all the necessary functions to run a show or event.
“7220 Entertainment puts on all kinds of events, but the Fine Arts and Lectures committee likes to focus on culture and exposing students and the community to different ideas,” Byzewski said.
The 7220 Entertainment Fine Arts and Lectures Committee meets every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Campus Activities Center (Union 012) during the school year.
