In the midst of a global financial crisis, the University of Wyoming planned spending reductions to conform with Wyoming Gov. Freudenthal’s request all state agencies consider possible budget reductions of 5 to 10%. ● U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming voted against the Matthew Shepard Act, which added sexual orientation and gender identity to groups protected by hate crime laws. The bill passed. ● 1070 undergrads and 1700 graduate students planned to walk at graduation. ● Wyoming reported no cases of swine flu, which was epidemic elsewhere.

The UW Outdoor Program was founded. ● Students evacuated Coe library after a bomb threat. ● The Wyoming Territorial Prisonfest on Prexy’s Pasture featured mountain men, aerobic dancers and a magician. ● The mother of a college basketball player who died of a cocaine overdose spoke in Cheyenne to appeal to parents to be more involved in promoting their children’s self-love and self-respect.

History professor Roger Daniels planned the University’s first black studies course. ● The total athletics budget for the next year was $1.2 million. ● U.S. senators for Wyoming Gale McGee and Clifford Hansen spoke at UW about campus unrest in response to general disillusionment with society and the Vietnam war. UW President William Carlson had affirmed his support for “lawful” protests on campus. ● A Casper boy was expelled from school for having long hair. ● The new student senate awarded UW’s Associated Women Students $3,000 more than the past senate.
