UW Presents will be concluding the spring semester with performances from young pianist Daniel Hsu this Friday.
Hsu performed here at UW three years ago with the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (UWSO), and nine months later went on to win a bronze medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, a prestigious and world-renowned competition.
For his second visit to campus Hsu will be giving a solo performance. Hsu was brought to campus by the UWSO Music Director, Michael Griffith, who has worked to get him back to the UW since his accomplishment in 2017 at the Van Cliburn competition.
“It’s one of the most popular of all piano solo works, and it’s utterly different from the Mozart Hsu did last time,” said UWSO Music Director Michael Griffith in a news release to UW, “It’s truly one of the great Romantic piano concertos. This was the concerto Van Cliburn played when he won the 1958 Tchaikovsky international piano competition, bringing the whole process full circle.”
Tonight Hsu will return as the UW Presents performer, at 7:30 p.m., in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall for a solo performance. This solo performance is highly anticipated, as it will be the closing of the 2019 spring semester.
“As a winner of several prestigious competitions, including the 2015 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, the 2016 Gilmore Young Artist award and, most recently, the bronze medalist at the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition, Daniel Hsu is a pianist gaining a serious reputation for someone so young,” said Philip Moline, the director of UW Presents, in a news release. “UW Presents is delighted to host him on campus for a full week, first performing with the UW Symphony Orchestra Thursday, May 2, followed by a solo recital Friday, May 3.”
Hsu has been playing piano since he was six years old, by age eight he had made his debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra and by age ten he was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now, at 21, Hsu has travelled across the country and won numerous awards for his talent. For more information on Hsu visit DanielHsuPiano.com.
Tickets for his performance are $10 for students, $12 for UW faculty/staff and senior citizens, and $15 for the public. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Art Box Office in the Buchanan Center or the Union Information desk, and can also be bought online at UWyo.edu/finearts.
