This year’s student government, Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW), intends to focus on working for the students, President Jason Wilkins said.
They have several goals for this semester, some new and some carried over from the last administration. Wilkins said the number one priority is the student body.
“It is our job to work for [the students], not the other way around,” he said. ASUW members want “to listen to students more and learn about what they feel is important to tackle on campus.”
One way that ASUW plans on getting more students involved is increasing the amount of “events that are more accessible for students,” said Wilkins. During ASUW events, Wilkins said that there are prizes and gifts that students can win “just by showing up.”
The previous administration introduced the ASUW Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to UW, and Wilkins said that ASUW plans to “work to meet those goals this year as well.” Wilkins said he also hopes ASUW will make an impact on campus this year by being more environmentally conscious and focusing on sustainability. Wilkins said ASUW has recognized the correlation between sustainability and wellness. He said ASUW wants to ensure that students are receiving proper care and resources so they can feel supported.
Accessibility is a key concern of ASUW, and Wilkins said they plan on fighting for more equitability and inclusivity among students. He said they plan on “working with various stakeholders and staff on campus” in order to achieve these goals. More will be detailed during their first meeting of the semester, in which Wilkins said they would discuss events that happened over the summer as well as providing “insight into the year ahead.”
The Executive Branch will also bring forth nominees for Executive Assistant positions for senate confirmation.
All students are welcome to attend ASUW meetings at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in the Union Senate Chambers. The first meeting is tonight..
