Focusing on faculty, finances and facilities, Acting UW President Neil Theobald addressed the university community Oct. 3.
In his first state of the university address, Theobald outlined the university accomplishments and plans going forward.
A record amount of students graduated in the last year, a record amount of minority students are enrolled in the university, and the University of Wyoming is leading the nation in blockchain technology. He discussed the value of the university’s role in agriculture and energy to study invasive plant species and find alternatives for energy while coal is not an option.
He said three major areas have become a central focus to the master plan for improving UW – faculty, finances and facilities.
With the additions and adjustments to faculty, finances, and facilities, they will aid in the relationship between the state and university to create a better future, he said.
In order to cultivate the great minds of tomorrow, Theobald purposed asking to double the funds for faculty. With doubled funds, the university will increase the staff to have 100 of the top faculty.
The next portion of the master plan focused on the finances to benefit students attending this university. He said he intends to increase the financial aid and expects twice as many students will graduate next year. He said that as of next February, the $1.5 million financial aid awarded to the best and brightest students will have a portion of the funds awarded to students on a need-basis to continue to decrease dropout rates and reduce student debts.
Campus facilities will be updated beginning with nine buildings. Wyoming Hall will be demolished, and student residence halls will be restored or replaced to ensure they are safe and clean for students.
