One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their life, the odds in men are about one in 883, according to a breast cancer awareness nonprofit, breastcancer.org.
October is National Breast Cancer awareness month, and through all of the pink ribbons and fundraising for foundations that help treat breast cancer, people can look into ways of decreasing their risk of cancer and donating to help those suffering from breast cancer.
The Mayo Clinic, the number one ranked hospital in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report, released a list on how to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Risk reduction approaches include limiting the amount of alcohol consumed, being active, avoiding smoking and avoiding exposure to radiation and pollution. Additional prevention strategies are to limit hormone therapy doses and to consider breast-feeding,
Efforts in prevention and treatment of breast cancer have come far. This is all possible because of the people who donate to foundations like the American Cancer Society or the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc.
