EmBODY Positivity is a Recognized Student Organization (RSO) here on campus dedicated to spreading body positivity and dispelling the media influence. They meet once a week, Wed. at 7 p.m. in room 202 in the Wyoming Union for general meetings for discussion and planning upcoming events.
“We are just a group of fun people, mostly talking about how the media portrays female bodies,” Riley Dimick, the RSO’s president, said. “Our mission is to help people look inside instead of looking towards the media for validation.”
The student organization started out in 2014 as Real Women, Real Bodies, but has recently changed their name last month to EmBODY Positivity. They made this change to become more inclusive to those of different genders, especially within their own group.
“We got a bunch of input on the name and we put it to vote. We came to the conclusion that EmBODY Positivity fits us,” said Dimick.
The group puts on different photo campaigns every semester to showcase different body types and promote body positivity around campus. They also organize different events, such as an angel fashion show last semester.
EmBODY Positivity is hosting the upcoming All Hallows’ Gala Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. The event will be sponsored by Mecah, United Multicultural center, Black Student Alliance, Sustainability coalition and Phi Beta Lambda. The event is going to be as sustainable as possible to limit waste and to help the environment. EmBODY Positivity and the other sponsors will provide recycling bins and using chinaware to limit plastic. Whatever leftover food will be donated to Anchor Student Farms for their use.
The gala will include a dinner for the first 120 people to pick up a ticket at the Union information desk. The dinner will include speaker Rachel Watson, a lecturer in the chemistry department at the university, to talk about inclusivity and positivity. After the dinner and speaker, the gala will finish off with a Halloween themed dance.
