Trey Duvall is a visiting artist who has an exhibit in the Visual Arts building lobby called Do, Do, Do, Do, Do through Nov. 16, and will also be hosting an art talk tomorrow.
“An artist talk is the sharing of creative research from visiting artists and scholars. In general, they are an opportunity to see and hear what inspires artists – such as art historical references, contemporary artists as influencers, and to better understand what motivates them to make or create,” said Katie Christensen, the Curator of Education and Statewide Engagement for the University of Wyoming.
Some of Duvall’s creative forms included in the exhibit are a large-scale installation, video, performance, and other sculptural and organizational mediums. In the exhibit, Duvall explores the ergonomics of absurdity, while shifting away from literal actions and towards abstract and philosophical propositions. While the repetitive action, sequence, or gesture seems to add up to nothing, it shows that nothing is something too. Duvall’s work concerns entropy, futility, humor, duration, stamina, and material or physical exhaustion.
Duvall received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Houston. His work has been recently exhibited at the RedLine Contemporary Art Center in Denver, CO, Galerie des Beaux-Artes de Nantes in Nantes, France and the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. He has also been featured on ABC News, the Houston Chronicle, and Art In America. Duvall is currently a resident artist at RedLine Contemporary Art Center and acting Director/Curator at SITE Gallery Houston in Houston, TX.
Christensen said that this exhibit is “accentuated by bright yellow rope piling and spooling in the center of the space, and snippets of video that include juice, paper and more. Viewers may be puzzled when they enter this darkened gallery and see the videos. I would invite you all to remain in your discomfort or perhaps curiosity and see what unfolds. It’s meant to be a little whacky, but underneath [all] of that are serious concepts that many people can relate to– it becomes a metaphor for life, work and experience.”
The Artist Talk event is open to anyone, especially those interested in contemporary art, and wanting to interact with an artist in real time. Duvall will be sharing about his work but he is also a performance artist, so attendees can likely expect some surprises as well!
Trey Duvall’s Artist Talk comes to the University of Wyoming campus, in an event that is open and free to the public. The event will be held Nov 12 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the UW Visual Arts Building in Room 111.
