With the new semester beginning, many new opportunities are opening up for students on campus. This includes Fraternity and Sorority Life, otherwise known as Greek Life.
Many students are familiar with the greek houses on campus. These include fraternities Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Nu, Alpha Sigma Phi, Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the newest colony Tau Kappa Epsilon.
For sororities there are six on campus: Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and the newest colony Alpha Phi.There are also two professional sororities: the engineering sorority Phi Sigma Rho and the agriculture sorority Sigma Alpha.
The University of Wyoming has a very unique Fraternity and Sorority Life community, said Ashtyn Harmsen, one of two recruitment chairs of Chi Omega.
“Here at UW we really value community, and that is something that is found in Fraternity and Sorority Life,” she said. “Through joining a sorority, women gain the opportunities for personal growth, community outreach, and a greater connection with sisters within their own chapter and across the Panhellenic Community.”
“Men should join greek life for the life long bonds whether that’s friendships or networking and greek life helps people learn the social skills to become leaders later in life,” said Chris Gudka, the recruitment chair of Sigma Chi.
With a growing community of over 675 students, the Fraternity Sorority Life (FSL) community has significantly outperformed the average undergraduate student at UW in academics. With GPA requirements and a healthy study environment the FSL average GPA is above a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Myths and Facts of FSL. Myth: All anyone does in greek life is party. Fact: While social interaction is part of greek life as it is with any other social organization, members of greek life also spend their time in leadership and support roles with planning events, attending meetings and learning how to balance their time effectively with the support of their fellow members.
Myth: Greek life has no benefits after graduation. Fact: Joining one of these organizations is a lifelong commitment, it is something that will greatly benefit members later in life with having lifelong friends and a great span of networking opportunities in the (inter)national organizations.
To get in contact with these organizations, they will be tabling in the Union and Washakie Dining Center, through Feb. 13, along with individual contact information provided below.
