The University of Wyoming has made the decision to extend the time for students to change from letter grades to S/U, or “satisfactory/unsatisfactory” grading, to April 30. The original deadline was April 17.
The change was approved on April 15 by the UW Board of Trustees. The change to S/U grading is valid for the current Spring 2020 semester and applies to all undergraduate and graduate coursework, according to a UW press release.
S/U grading will not have an impact on grade point average (GPA) calculation, though an “unsatisfactory” grade will not give course credit. As such, undergraduates will be required to discuss changing to S/U grading with their instructors and academic advisors and must obtain their approval.
Graduate students will need approval from their major professors, though students applying to graduate school or professional school are advised that letter grading may be more beneficial in order to count towards GPAs.
Students who are not radically affected by the COVID-19 crisis are advised the same. Federal aid may be impacted by changing to S/U grading due to GPA calculations, so students should discuss this with advisors and/or the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid before submitting a change request.
A request to change grading to S/U is available on the Office of the Registrar’s website. This is to be filled out online and signed and approved electronically by advisors or major professors.
