Despite setbacks of COVID-19 and changing situations on campus, fraternities and sororities say that they are committed to continuing the Greek Life experience for students.
“We are committed to putting on recruitment in the most normal way we can while still being cautious and thoughtful about everyone’s safety,” said College Panhellenic Council President Grace Boorom.
Things will be kicked off with Recruitment Week September 10 through 14. Recruitment events will be hosted in a hybrid involvement of in person and online meetings.
The University of Wyoming Panhellenic community recruitment week will allow students to rush six sororities. The Interfraternity community will be focusing on recruiting at the beginning of the semester, there will be open recruitment for anyone wanting to join.
The University of Wyoming Panhellenic community is working closely with the UW COVID-19 task force and have made their own Recruitment Response Team to keep everyone safe while still making sure they can participate.
Although recruitment is still happening, most other Greek Life organization events have been cancelled. With many things still being up in the air, many groups are playing it safe to keep everyone’s health a priority.
“Chapters are expected to follow all university and state guidelines in order to keep our members safe,” said Boorom. “At least for the beginning of the semester, chapters have been urged to utilize online capabilities, such as zoom, as much as they can as we continue to navigate what the fall will bring.”
There will also be some members of fraternities and sororities that will not be returning to campus that chapters will have to help keep involved. Chapters are in the process of creating plans that work best for all their members.
Additionally, there are some chapters that have new recruits who were not able to have activation ceremonies due to last year’s abrupt interruption. These members are excited to finally get involved in their chapters and Greek Life in general.
Another big part of Greek Life is fraternity and sorority houses.
“Housing this fall will look different for every house as they navigate what their sorority nationals have mandated as well as what the university has outlined,” said Boorom. “All three sororities are planning to have some women live in this fall with precautions put in place specifically around meals, guests, and cleaning.”
