Downtown offers COVID safe events for students and Laramie residents

Bond’s Brewing and other businesses downtown, including Laramie Main Street which is a volunteer organization that serves as the voice of downtown Laramie according to their website, host events for individuals to attend while being COVID-19 safe such as scavenger hunts and other games.

“It’s a good reason to get out and do stuff with family and friends,” said Jay Bond of Bond’s Brewing.

Trey Sherwood, director of Laramie Main Street, said there is a scavenger hunt currently happening until Halloween on Oct. 31. Individuals may download the GooseChase app on their smartphones and complete over 50 missions for prizes while exploring the downtown area.

Cross True, a senior majoring in electrical engineering, said he attends scavenger hunts downtown fairly often. More recently he attended the Downtown Mashup scavenger hunt enjoying the game and food. True said he did not know there was one happening currently though.

Sherwood said Bond’s Brewing has COVID-19 friendly events such as comedy, bingo and pumpkin carving as well.

Bond said they are having an Octoberfest, trivia nights every Tuesday starting at 7 p.m., and bingo every Thursday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the trivia and bingo nights receives money. Bond’s Brewery sells the trivia and bingo cards each for a dollar and places all the money received from that in a jackpot for the winner. Food trucks are also offered every Tuesday and Friday.

True said he heard about the Bond’s Brewing events last semester but wouldn’t attend this semester unless he could go without a mask.

“COVID is almost impossible to get if you’re outside and even if you do get it it’s less deadly than the flu,” said True. “Also if you’re asymptomatic you aren’t contagious. That’s what all the science says but we have chosen to ignore that and use the “pandemic” to further government control and create fear. So in short anything that doesn’t require masks I’m much more likely to support.”

Bond said they sanitize the bingo boards, tables and chairs and maintain six feet of distance. They also have a system to mark clean and dirty tables to keep track of what needs to be sanitized.

Bond said anyone is invited to these events; however, anyone under 21 must come with a directly related legal guardian.

Jeremy Davis from Residence Life and Dining Services is not aware of anything happening downtown for students to attend. He said that students should check out events that are happening on campus through UWConnect and the Campus Activities Center.

True said he has found other ways to get out of the house and be active other than going downtown.

“I started a group of people playing football on Mondays and also go swing dancing on Monday nights,” said True.

He also has “house dinner” once a week which consists of close friends and family getting together to have a nice meal, socialize and play board games. Fridays also consist of frisbee games at the local parks with friends as another way of getting out and being active.
