On December 7th, Senator Elizabeth Warren held a Zoom conference call with student journalists from colleges across the country. The round table discussion focused on future college debt relief and higher education plans.
“I wanted to use this as a chance to talk about priorities and also to take whatever questions you all might have. President Elect Biden and Vice-President Elect Harris beat an incumbent President for the first time in the lives of most of you, and they flipped states that had not voted for Democrats in decades. They did that by running on the most progressive, economic and racial justice platform of any general election nominee, ever,” said Sen. Warren.
According to Sen. Warren, this platform includes bold policies such as tuition free college.
One journalist asked what Sen. Warren’s plan is for making Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs) more accessible.
“Women carry more student loan debt than men do and they have a harder time paying it off,” said Sen. Warren.
“Right off the top, obviously cancellation of student loan debt is an issue that effects men and women, but it’s one that disproportionately effects women. In the same way that it disproportionately effects people of color. What I want to do is this two fold: I want to wipe out a big chunk of the student loan debt, and I want us as a nation to put money into resources so that everyone can go to college debt free.”
According to Sen. Warren, this should come as no surprise since she has spent most of her life as a college professor rather than as a politician.
“I think this is one of the best investments to make as a nation.”
