To adhere to COVID-19 guidelines and safety regulations during the 2020-2021 school year, the University of Wyoming provided a hybrid of online and in-person classes.
All students went fully online after fall break, which will happen once more after spring break occurs.
According to the Tuition and Fees section on the Student Financial Services website, tuition for the fall 2020 to summer 2021 school year is $145 per credit for undergraduate residents and $603 per credit for undergraduate non-residents.
These prices were lower during the fall 2019 to summer 2020 school year, at $139 per credit for undergraduate residents and $558 for undergraduate non-residents.
University of Wyoming student Jacob Brandes said that online schooling doesn’t utilize facilities to the extent that in-person classes do and should therefore be less expensive.
“I’m online for everything, and I don’t think we should pay as much for online classes as we did for in-person,” Brandes said. “I think we should have more tutoring and resources with the cost, although that might be difficult with COVID.”
The absence of CARES Act funding for the spring semester has also been a source of frustration for some students, especially those who are struggling financially during the pandemic.
“During fall semester each student had the chance to get money from the CARES Act, but this semester they aren’t giving any more,” UW student Jack Schulz said.
Evan Heil, a student in the UW college of business, also said that online tuition should not be the same price as it is for in-person since much of campus is not being used to the extent that it once was.
“It’s way cheaper to deliver online than it is in person,” Heil said. “We aren’t at the capacity where it would make sense to operate at full cost. I think tuition should be half of what it was.”
Heil said that the online delivery fee has varied among students. He said that he has heard of online fee prices ranging from $225 to $375.
The University of Wyoming Tuition and Fees Details document states that the online class fee is $25 per credit hour. This fee applies to video conference, audio conference, online, hybrid, and on-site courses.
