Student Success Center open after 1.5 years of construction

The Peter M. & Paula Green Johnson Student Success Center, located on the west end of the College of Business, is finally open after over a year and a half of construction.

Entrepreneurship student Joe Rubald said “I am really excited that the construction is finishing up. It’s a project we have all been waiting on for nearly two years now.”

Katya Gubina, student in Management with a Supply Chain concentration, said “I’m sad I won’t be able to be in this space since I’m graduating. But, I’m excited for the future students that will come here. I really think this will be the new atrium and people will be able to hang out here and socialize.”

Taylor True, Assistant Director and Enrollment Management at UW, said “We have already started to see some students in here studying and using the rooms. We want it to be a student focused space. We wanted somewhere in the college to be open for the students and a spot where students want to hang out in. It has become that already even though some students are not on campus right now.”

The Student Success Center’s aim importantly targets not only the academic success but also professional success among students. The center provides both advising and professional advice for incoming students, current students, and fresh alumni.

The center has enrollment management, which advises related services for incoming students from high school or transfer students from another college, and the awarding of scholarships.

The center also provides academic advising including degree progression and completion tracking, study abroad consultation and balancing student demand with faculty and space availability.

Finally, the center can be used for professional development. The center seeks to build corporate relations for students to utilize, finds internships, fosters mentorships, and aids with resume building and the interview process for students to capitalize on their professional opportunities.

The Student Success Center has professional staff to help with their services, but also has a variety of student employees. These student employees provide a peer-to-peer experience and can relate to students on professional matters firsthand.

Prior to the reopening, the Student Success Center was in the basement of the College of Business. The project timeline was able to stay on track for the most part, despite the pandemic. The Student Success Center will be a place besides the Atrium in which students can study in the College of Business.

There are study spaces both in open areas, and some that are more reserved to fit student preferences. Students can also reserve one of six interview rooms–for studying, interviews, group projects, case competitions, etc. To reserve a room, simply visit the front desk in the center.

The interview rooms also have monitors that students can use for virtual interviews for a more professional setting compared to a dorm room or apartment. There is also a conference room and a case room, that accommodate larger groups.

The center was already able to utilize its new space by holding a case competition event on April 16, in partnership with the Daniels Fund and the Ethics Club.
