On June 7, Dr. Kevin Carman began working full time for the University of Wyoming as the new UW Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
With the recommendation by President Ed Seidel, Dr. Carman’s appointment was approved on March 10 by the UW Board of Trustees.
Carman was the provost and executive vice president at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) from 2013 to 2020. During his time there, UNR was recognized as an R1 Research university and a Community Engaged university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Along with this, 4-year graduation rates more than doubled.
Carman said that the increase in 4-year graduation rates was a result of investments in student success through programs such as NevadaFIT, an initiative dedicated to the transition from high school to college.
“It takes a strong leadership team to move an institution forward, and I was fortunate to work with great people at UNR,” Carman said. “We also adopted a sophisticated, data-driven advising platform that helped guide students toward successful outcomes. We achieved these goals while growing the university and seeing the diversity of our student and faculty communities increase dramatically.”
Carman was also a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he worked with UW President Ed Seidel.
“I know that he [President Seidel] is a visionary and I look forward to working with him to see UW move to new horizons of excellence,” Carman said.
Carman said that his number one priority at UW is student success and that learning, discovery and community engagement are the three pillars of a land-grant university.
“I look forward to bringing to UW a variety of new programs and tools that I am confident will increase retention and graduation rates for all students,” Carman said. “I’m also eager to promote and build upon UW’s reputation as a research university as well as its commitment to serving the citizens of Wyoming.”
Throughout the past several weeks, Carman has worked with members of the UW community amidst his move to Laramie.
“The leadership team is deeply committed to fulfilling the mission of UW,” Carman said. “There is clearly a great deal of pride in the University and the entire state that I see manifested in students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external stakeholders.”
