UW recognizes four professors in naming of Wyoming Excellence Chairs

Professors Mohamed Ahmed, Dario Grana, Scott Henkel and Kevin Monteith have been named Wyoming Excellence Chairs in recognition for outstanding scholarship and teaching.

Ahmed is the director of the Driving Simulation and Human Factors Lab, as well as the Williams and Person Professor/Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management. He is recognized for the development of a road safety research program, raising nearly $10 million in research funding throughout his time at UW, and exceptional work with his UW research group. 

Grana is an associate professor in the School of Energy Resources, as well as the Department of Geology and Geophysics. Grana received both the Petroleum Engineering Junior Faculty Research Initiation Fellowship Award and the Eni Award in 2014 for petroleum engineering research and developing a method using seismic techniques to gain information on oil and gas reservoirs. 

Henkel is both an assistant professor in the departments of English and African American and Diaspora Studies, and the director of the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research. In 2018, his book “Direct Democracy: Collective Power, the Swarm, and the Literatures of the Americas” won a C.L.R. James Award for Best Published Book for Academic or General Audiences from the Working-Class Studies Association. 

Monteith is an associate professor in the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Zoology and Physiology. His research concentrates on the merging of nutrition, population and quantitative ecology to gain a better understanding of behavior. His research has been published in more than 80 leading scientific journals. 

The Excellence in Higher Education Endowment was created in 2006 and funded at $105 million, of which $70 million was appointed to the University of Wyoming. Part of this endowment was dedicated to establishing Wyoming Excellence Chairs to recognize faculty members who go above and beyond in their scholarship and teaching.
