The open container law has been active since May 27 and will last until September 25. Open containers are allowed every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm.
Nancy Bartholomew, City Clerk for the city of Laramie, said that the Wyoming state statute limits what liquor license holders are allowed to serve for off-premise consumption.
“Only retail liquor license holders, microbreweries, wineries and any of the microbrewery or winery satellite locations, which we don’t have any currently in Laramie, are allowed to serve for off-premise consumption,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew said that the open containter laws will continue as normal throughout Laramie Jubilee Days, which take place this week.
Places that are allowed to serve open container include Roxie’s, the Buckhorn Bar, Sweet Melissa’s, the Cowboy and Bond’s Brewing Company.
Jay Bond, owner of Bond’s Brewing Company, said that customers partake in having open containers from Thursday to Saturday.
“I would say there’s probably 5 percent of people who do it every one of those days,” Bond said. “It really just depends on what’s going on.”
Assistant City Manager, Todd Freezer, said that open container is limited to a specific area in the city.
“It is not allowed to cross over the walk bridge into the west side,” Freezer said. “It is an area that basically encompasses from 1st Street to 4th Street and from University to Harney.”
Freezer said that only plastic and aluminum containers are allowed and glass is prohibited. Drinks are not to be taken into alleyways.
“Just like anything, it’s important that if they do have waste or anything like that that they get it into the proper trash can. With open container, you’re not supposed to take your drinks into the alley ways.
“A lot of people go back there and leave trash, so we do ask that they keep drinks out of there. We didn’t have any problems last year and I don’t anticipate any this year,” Freezer said.
