It’s that time of the year again, dear readers. The 2021-2022 school year at UW begins August 23 and it’s a good idea to start preparing if you haven’t already. Feeling organized and put together is a wonderful way to begin your studies.
Whether you’re an incoming freshman or a returning pupil, the items listed below are sure to make your school year easier. Plus, who doesn’t love back-to-school shopping?
1 – Microwaveable foods
We all know that ramen noodles are a staple in the college world, and for good reason. Having easy-to-make food at hand makes university life a whole lot easier. When you’ve been studying for hours and are too drained to cook, these quick meals come in handy.
Make sure to stock up on instant mac ‘n’ cheese, mini pizzas, Michelina’s frozen entrees and, of course, ramen. Although these might not be the healthiest options, they are highly convenient for on-the-go students.
2 – Reusable water bottle
If you read my opinion on environmental consciousness last week, you know that I am weirdly passionate about reusable water bottles. But I have my reasons – they save you a significant amount of money, they are good for the environment and they keep you hydrated on campus all day.
Ditch the plastic bottles this year and save your money. You would be shocked by how big of a difference a reusable water bottle can make while you’re walking around campus.
3 – Storage, storage, storage
Organization is a key component to reducing stress during the school year, and it can be achieved with the proper amount of storage. Rather than having your papers and textbooks strewn all over your desk, invest in bins or a desk organizer to keep things in place.
This is a huge one for freshmen especially, as the dorms don’t have a ton of space. Storage bins, shelves and cubbies will help you keep all of your clothing and personal items in a neat fashion.
4 – Planner
Again, organization is key in college. If you have trouble keeping track of deadlines and due dates, it might be time to invest in a planner. This is the perfect way to know what upcoming projects and papers you have and it will help you remember your schedule.
If you’re a massive procrastinator like me, a planner can also help motivate you to start those assignments. This is definitely one of the items I could not live without in college, and it will save you a ton of stress.
5 – Pictures from home
Alright, let’s get sentimental. If you’re coming from out of state to UW and leaving your friends and family, or even moving out of your parents’ place for the first time, you might experience a bit of homesickness during your first few weeks of college.
This is why it’s important to take some of your memories with you. Before school starts, make sure to print a few pictures out with your pals or family members to hang up in your room. And this doesn’t just go for incoming freshmen – I decorated my room with pictures of family and friends all throughout college.
So, dear readers, it’s time to head out and start preparing for the upcoming year. With the exception of number 5, each of these items can be found at Walmart for reasonable prices.
I wish everyone a happy and healthy school year!
