Imagine it is negative four degrees outside and the last thing you want to do is trudge through the winter weather to go to class.
But what if you didn’t have to? What if you could join on Zoom, and not just because you were quarantined.
Should all classes have a zoom option?
“Yes, it would help students out when they just can’t make it to the class that day.” Junior Hannah Spicer said.
While, Senior Lauren Shields said, ‘No, speaking from personal experience, I don’t pay attention during zoom classes, and just scroll on Tik-Tok, as I’m sure many other students do as well.”
I personally think all classes should have a zoom option.
Just the other day, it was negative three degrees while I was walking to a class in the classroom building, and all we did that day was watch a video, but I still had to go for the attendance points.
If I could have joined on Zoom and had the screen shared with me, I could have watched the video from the comfort of my nice, warm bed and I would have been in a much better mood.
I can see why teachers and students feel like Zoom school lets students mess around and not learn, but if teachers require students to have their cameras on , unless there is an outstanding circumstance, they are far less likely to sit and scroll on their phone.
However, there will be cases where a Zoom option would not be possible.
Think of labs, clinical studies, student teaching, and other stuff like that. But those are different from a regular class.
It might be more challenging for the student to learn on Zoom, especially if the rest of the class is in person, but that is on them. If they want to join from Zoom and risk their learning, that is their fault.
“I was not a huge fan of Zoom, because there was less interaction, and I felt the learning was less personal for students.” Teachers assistant Mackenzie Corbett said
But teachers could set a rule like “Students are only allowed three Zoom classes before it affects their grade- unless there is a special circumstance” so students don’t abuse it.
A Zoom option will also relieve students of the stress of missing class if they have things like a family emergency coming up.
They could leave the university to go and deal with it and still have the opportunity to continue their education.
So should all classes have a zoom option?
Unless there are extenuating circumstances, i think we should.
But will teachers and the university ever allow that to happen? Probably not unless there is another global pandemic.
For now, we students wishing we could join on Zoom will have to layer up and trek through the negative degree weather when we go to our class wishing we could do it from our nice warm bed.
