Club Baseball is a non-varsity student organization available to those enrolled at the University of Wyoming.
It provides students invested in sports with an opportunity to compete at a higher level than intramural sports, without the demands of collegiate athletics.
“Club Baseball is a great way for me to play the sport, but not have the pressure of being a full-time collegiate athlete. It is fun, and rewarding and I get to travel- which is my favorite part,” club member Jacob Lewis said.
Club Baseball competes in the Mid-America West Conference of the National Collegiate Baseball Association (NCBA).
Other teams in this league include Colorado State University, University of Colorado Boulder, Mesa State University, the Colorado School of Mines, and the University of Northern Colorado.
The club participates in both fall and spring semester games, in addition to practicing three to five times per week.
“I am hopeful that we will have a good season this year. It’s my last year here at UW, and I would love to go out with a bang. We have a good team and we all get along so that should help out a lot,” Lewis said.
The fall semester is filled with practices and tournaments, whereas the spring signals the start of league play.
The team consists of twenty-two undergraduate students dedicated to the sport.
Club Baseball is coached by Tucker Priola, Samuel Desrosiers, and Calvin Leeland who are also players on the team.
The team participates in a series of fundraising activities annually, such as UW’s Giving Day. The team also has a website where they sell UW gear and coffee.
The team is primarily player funded, although the university does provide some funding. Funds are used for all team expenses such as game and tournament travel expenses, uniforms, equipment, field rental, and umpires.
In the spring of 2021, the team was unable to host or travel to any games due to COVID-19, but were hopeful that the university would allow them to resume their games in the fall of 2021.
The team has made many division playoff appearances over the past year and is looking forward to the upcoming season now that they can travel and host games again.
The team’s first game took place on March 7, 2022 in a tournament in Mesquite, Nevada.
They played Utah State, Boise State, the University of Montana, Northern Arizona University, and Weber State.
They lost 25-11 to Boise, followed by a loss to Utah State 16-2.
The club defeated Weber State, with a final score of 4-3.
Their official season starts on April 2, in a three-game series against the Colorado State Rams.
That game will be away, but the team has their first home game on April 8, at noon, against the Colorado School of Mines.
