Last minute goal leads Cowgirls to first win of the season

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls soccer team got their first win of the 2022 season against Utah State University (USU)  on Thursday, September 29.

The game looked like it was going to end in a 1-1 tie, but in the 89th minute of the game, senior Jamie Tatum scored a last-minute goal guiding the Cowgirls to a 2-1 win. Junior Alyssa Bedard scored the team’s first goal.

“I’m so happy we scored on a set piece because, holy cow, we have worked on those so much,” head coach Colleen Corbin said.

“We were very intentional on how we set that corner kick up to what we thought Utah State was going to do defensively. So, it was super fun to see it go in.”

The Utah State Aggies are currently the only women’s soccer team in the Mountain West to hold a two-team win, and Coach Corbin thinks very highly of them, making the win that much sweeter.

“I think Utah State is a phenomenal team, and I’m not taking anything away from them or what they did,” Corbin said.

“I still believe they are the most complete team right now in the conference, and we knew it would take every ounce of everything today to earn a result.”

Alyssa Bedard, one of the scorers, scored her fourth of the season.  It is also the first time since 2016 that a Wyoming player has scored three games in a row.

“Alyssa Bedard’s goal was brilliant,” Corbin said.

“It changed the momentum of the game completely. We went from feeling like we were behind the eight ball again to feeling like we were on the right foot and back in it.”

The cowgirls are now 2-4-4 this season and will have the opportunity for another win Sunday, October 2, when they will face off against the Boise State Broncos.
