In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI) will be hosting its second annual Bras with Cause event in downtown Laramie.
“This is something that can affect both men and women, and we want to encourage people to talk about it [breast cancer awareness],” Kelly Morgan, Executive Director of the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative, said.
The event will be on Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Roxie’s on Grand. It will include festivities like pink drinks (alcoholic and non), a bra decoration contest, and a Master of Ceremonies presentation from a cancer survivor.
“They [Roxie’s] have been very generous,” Morgan said. “This is only the second time we’ve held this event in Laramie, and we want to continue to do work across the state.”
The Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative also offers some financial aid assistance options, including an Early Detection Voucher and a series of WBCI Community Grants.
“Wyoming is last in the nation for breast [cancer] screening for individuals 50 plus,” Morgan said. “If we can perform these screenings more often, the more likely we are to catch cancer early.”
This fact, Morgan notes, is attributed to Wyoming’s unique rural healthcare, and that families struggle both financially and with the stigma surrounding cancer.
“I think people are scared, but if they practice the buddy system and say ‘hey, let’s go do this together,’ then we are making progress,” Morgan said.
Other upcoming WBCI events include a free screening this Saturday (Oct. 8, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) in Casper as well as the annual “Pink Panther Walk” in Cheyenne (10:00 a.m.).
