The University of Wyoming Cowgirl’s golf team placed 16th in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, where they faced off against the SEC standout Vanderbilt and three reigning conference champions: Tulane (AAC,) Xavier (Big East), and Denver (Summit).
The tournament took place in Denver, Colorado, from Oct.7-9, with the host being Denver University. There were 16 collegiate teams from all across the nation in attendance.
During the tournament, sophomore Kyla Wilde joined junior Samantha Hui as the only other cowgirl to have three top-25 finishes in the first three tournaments of the year. Next on the lineup for this past weekend were sophomore Rachel Stoinski, graduate student Jadan Gonzalez, and sophomore Morgan Ryan. Freshman Sophie Spiva also played, but as an independent.
On the first day of the tournament, Wilde, Ryan, and Gonzalez led the Cowgirls, with each of them tying for 60th place with 77 strokes. Following them, Hui and Stoninksi ended the first day of the tournament, tied in 78th with 80 recorded strokes.
The team as a whole ended the day with 311 strokes landing them in 16th place, eight strokes behind Grand Canyon University.
Day two of the tournament took place on October eighth, where Gonzalez continued to lead the way, recording 73 strokes that day, her total number being 150, which dumped her up to 49th place.
Ryan was not far behind, ending the day in 64th, and Hui finished three spots behind her in 67th.
The Cowgirls ended the day in 16th again, with their total number of strokes being 612.
On the last day of the tournament, Gonzalez ended proudly after shooting her best round that weekend. She completed the tournament tied in 44th with 222 strokes.
Ryan also saved her best round for Friday, tying for 62nd with a three-round score of 226. Hui ended with a 228, finishing in 66th.
The Cowgirls scored 907 strokes as a team, ending the tournament in 16th place, with only five strokes being Hawaii.
The team will finish their fall season on Oct. 24-26, when they will travel to Kapolei, Hawaii, to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
